Think about a speech, song, or message that has inspired or motivated you. How did the speaker or writer use language to make an impact? Connect your experience to at least one rhetorical device you identified in Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
Prompt Response: One song that has really inspired me is Drops of Jupiter. This is because the song is very upbeat and motivational. But, it also has a deeper meaning. In the chorus when it says, "Did you sail across the sun? Did you make it to the milky way?" I feel like it was a good choice of words. This is because comparing the person's overall journey to travelling across outer space is really impactful, it makes me feel like my progress is greater than I realized. Not only that but the line where it says, "And that Heaven is overrated" and "Tracing her way through constellations" are meaningful. These are all metaphors, similar to the ones found in the I Have a Dream speech by Dr. King. These metaphors are meant to represent the singer's mom who had cancer, which connected to myself personally. I thought it was a beautiful way to represent a dark thing.
Summary: In class today we did a rhetorical analysis of the I Have a Dream speech by Dr. King.
Reflection: I learned how to effectively read a piece of writing and check for rhetorical devices. I also learned how to identify purposeful diction.
