Today, we learned how to use clustering as a brainstorming strategy before responding to any writing prompt. Think about today’s practice. How did clustering help you generate ideas, examples, etc for the prompt? What part of the clustering process was most useful to you, and do you think you would use this strategy when planning an AP Lang essay? Explain.

 Prompt Response: Clustering helped me generate ideas because it allowed me to put down everything that had came to mind without worrying about organizing it right away. Once I had my main idea in the center, I could branch off into different examples, reasons, and connections that would be used in my essay. The most useful part of clustering is being able to visually see how my ideas connect to each other. It also helps me noticed which ideas I had enough evidence to write about and which we were weaker, and should maybe left out. I think I would use clustering when planning an AP Lang essay because it will help me quickly organize my thoughts before forming my body paragraphs.

Reflection: I learned how to properly brainstorm by using methods like clustering. I now know how to effectively organize my ideas before writing my AP Lang essay.

Think about a time when you made a claim or gave an opinion, but someone asked you, “Why?” or “How do you know?” Describe the situation. What evidence did you use to support your point, and why is explaining your evidence just as important as providing it?

 Prompt Response: One time I made a claim supported by evidence was when I was finding out if I was being cheated on. Of course, it was a large claim to make- and potentially hurtful if proven incorrect- so I had to work diligently to find evidence and explain it thoroughly. To explain the situation, I was dating a boy and had an intuition that I was not the only girl. So, I talked to multiple of our mutual friends to get verbal accounts. Not only this but I thought of all of the times where there had been suspicious behavior I could use as evidence once explained. An example of this is when he showed me his phone and there was a girl's name which matched the name from a story I was told by a friend. Once I properly gathered solid evidence, I presented my claim to a group of friends. Write about a fear you have overcome.

 Prompt Response: One fear that I overcame was roller coasters. I have extreme anxiety about many things, which causes me to overthink about outcomes of different normal events. I see the danger and negativity in small things that not everyone notices. That is why for as long as I could remember, I refused to go on roller coasters. I would miss out on trips to Six Flags with my friends, and sit out on rides at fairs. But eventually, my best friend helped me work up the courage to go on a small roller coaster. At first, I was terrified. But by the end of the ride, I felt exhilarated. Every since then, I have been obsessed with roller coasters. I love the rush, the drops, the loops, and everything in between.  Summary: Today in class we went over corrections in our argumentative paragraph. Reflection: I learned that I need to specify my evidence in greater detail or it isn't effective. I also learned that I need to explain my evidence better and not make assumptions.
